The Leadership mural of St. Paul’s Community Church is currently installed in the courtyard at West 45th and Franklin on the Near West Side of Cleveland. For this mural community members from all over Ohio City and the Detroit Shoreway neighborhood of the Near West Side were interviewed about their experiences and perspectives on leadership in their community. From the interviews images were developed that represented each community member’s perspective. I worked from photos of community member in poses that represented their concepts of leadership. The aspects of leadership that each community member felt was valuable in their community, was then shared and spoken about with the teens. This technique of hands on learning for the teens, impacted their perspective on who the leaders are in their neighborhood, what they value and believe, and what the teens themselves could do to contribute to social change in their neighborhood. The Leadership Mural employed eight teens for a full summer of job training through the arts.
