Detroit and West 25th Street
West 25th Street Mural
During 2006 we worked on a mural for the corner of West 25th and Detroit on the theme of unity between our neighbors. To develop the concepts for the mural on the side of Route 2 community members in area churches, block clubs and from CMHA housing collaborating in envisioning what a more united neighborhood would look like. The visioning process brought people from a broad range of backgrounds together to arrive at ideas and concepts they felt reflected the change they wanted to see in their neighborhood.
Internships for teens were offered to include fine arts and leadership training as part of a job training experience creating public art. The teen interns were provided tutoring and professional development courses through West Side Ecumenical Ministry’s Workforce Investment Act Program during the school year and during the summer learned applicable job skills through the creation of a public mural.
